How do they know what I like?

.

Ever discovered a cool video recommended to you by YouTube? Rebecca Tickle explains how music and video apps can recommend music and films you might like to watch next.

By learning what you like and what you don’t like by using artificial intelligence, and by comparing your taste with that of other people, these services can do a surprisingly good job of recommending new videos and songs.

Talking points:
  • As well as video and film, what other services can you think of which could make recommendations like this? (We thought of online takeaway ordering!)
  • Can you think of any other ways for a computer to recommend films you might like?
  • Have you ever recommended a song or film to a friend? Why did you recommend it to them, and did they like it?
